Male artists still dominate

8 of the 10 most played artists on Norwegian radio are men, according to a recent statistics report from Gramo.

Only Astrid S and Dagny have made the list of the most played artists on the radio in 2022. Otherwise, it's all male, with Ed Sheeran, Kygo and The Weeknd in first, second and third place respectively. The annual statistics, published by Gramo, show that these artists have together had over 3,000 hours of airplay on Norwegian radio stations in 2022.

- "It's sad that the distribution is so uneven," says Randi Tytingvåg, a current recording artist, to Vårt Land.

Male artists also at the top of the charts

Men also dominate the list of the most played songs. Behind songs like "Bad Habits", "Cold Cold Heart" and "Dancing Feet" are Ed Sheeran, Elton John and Kygo, and further down the list are Harry Styles, Benson Boone and Chris Holsten, before Adele arrives with "Easy On Me" in seventh place.

Although women may be involved on a recording, either as a songwriter, musician, producer or as a co-artist, it is the men who are the main artists on most recordings.

- As elsewhere in society, gender balance is also an important and central issue in the music industry. The figures in the Gramo statistics for 2022 confirm that we still have a job to do. During by:Larm this September, Gramo is organizing a panel discussion on gender balance in the music industry. Both prominent artists and industry professionals will take part in the conversation, which will discuss barriers and measures," says Kim Skarning Andersen, CEO of Gramo.

More correct distribution to rights holders

Gramo has established a new and more precise way to distribute royalties from the use of recorded music in public places (shops, cafes, restaurants, gyms, etc.). The new distribution model more closely reflects the music that is actually used by our more than 16,000 corporate customers, and thus also provides a more correct distribution of royalties to our rights holders.
