This is what we listened to in 2024

Gramo launches this year's radio statistics: Which songs dominated the radio in 2024? Which artists and songs got the most airtime? And how much Norwegian music is actually played? Now this year's radio statistics from Gramo are here.

Josefin – radio song of the year

Amanda Delara's Norwegian version of Albin Lee Meldau's "Josefin" was the most played song of the year, with a whopping 654 hours, 2 minutes and 34 seconds on the air. The song tops both the list of most played songs overall, most played Norwegian songs and most played songs with Norwegian lyrics.

Delara also became the tenth most played Norwegian lead artist, with a total of 17 different songs played on the radio.

"When we recorded Josefin, I never imagined it would have such a big life. Experiencing how people have sung along, shared it and made it their own has been very special. I owe a big thank you to both the listeners, the radio stations – and of course Albin for writing such a beautiful song" – Delara

The second most played Norwegian song was Randi Oline's version of Cezinando's "Kristoffer Robin".

Kygo back on top

Kygo is once again the most-played Norwegian lead artist – with over 1690 hours and 40 minutes of playing time spread across 59 songs. After being overtaken by Emma Steinbakken in 2023, he reclaimed the throne this year, with hits like “Whatever” (feat. Ava Max) and “For Life” (feat. Zak Abel, Nile Rodgers & Vandelux).

Regardless of nationality, it was French David Guetta who took the top spot – with over 1,731 hours and 19 minutes of playtime during the year.

Women make their mark

It is also worth noting the proportion of women in the top 10: Only 3 of the 10 most played main artists, regardless of nationality, were women; Emma Steinbakken and Dagny, as well as Sweden's Zara Larsson. Among the 10 most played Norwegian main artists, 5 were women.

The proportion of female lead artists in the top 10 played songs is also high on several radio channels:

  • P4: 100%
  • NRK P1: 80%
  • NRK P3: 80%
  • NRK district channels: 90%
  • Radio Norway: 60%

Norwegian music dominates several channels

The figures show that Norwegian music is strong: On average, 39.3 percent of the music played on the radio in 2024 was Norwegian. On NRK P1, P3 and the district channels, the share was over 50 percent.

The share of Norwegian music also increased on Radio Norway, from 5.4 percent in 2023 to 6 percent in 2024.

Did you know that by the way that…

  • Maria Mena's "Home for Christmas" once again became the most played Christmas song with over 92 hours?
  • The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra and the Oslo Philharmonic were among the most frequently played Norwegian main artists?
  • Avicii climbed a whopping 63 places – from 100th place in 2023 to 37th place in 2024 – despite his passing in 2018?

About Gramo statistics

The
annual Gramo statistics have been published since 2006. The statistics for 2024 are based on reports for the same year, and include all radio play of released recordings on NRK channels P1, P2, P3, P1+, P13, MP3, Super, Sapmi, Jazz, Folk Music, Classical and district channels, as well as all P4 and Radio Norway channels.

Reports from local radio and public performances (shops, hotels, restaurants, etc.) are included in the calculation of remuneration to the rights holders, but are not included in the figures for the statistics.

We have nearly one million unique recordings in our database, and in 2024 we processed 325.5 thousand hours of radio-played music.
